West Ham youngster Reece Oxford cuts short Gladbach loan - sources

West Ham United's Reece Oxford will return to the club in December after cutting short a season-long loan at Borussia Monchengladbach, sources have told ESPN FC.

Oxford, 18, moved to the Bundesliga club in the summer in order to gain first-team experience.

But the England under-20 international, who can play in both defence and midfield, has yet to make an appearance for Monchengladbach, remaining on the bench for six successive league games.

Sources close to the player have told ESPN FC that Oxford, West Ham and Monchengladbach have agreed to terminate the loan deal, with the teenager returning to the London Stadium in December.

FIFA regulations mean he would be unable to play for West Ham until January, being eligible for Slaven Bilic's squad from Jan. 1.

Both Oxford and West Ham have grown frustrated by Monchengladbach's failure to give him an opportunity, with sources claiming the German club do not appear to need him.

Oxford will return to West Ham on Dec. 16, the date of his 19th birthday.

Percy I've seen spence play a few times. I think like Stanislas and Britton before him, he will get to the PL and be a solid squad player. He has some class and may even push on further if given the chance

Clearly not good enough at the moment in their eyes!!..fair enough...if he's not good enough for them then he isn't for the Premiership that's for sure!!..20k a week off the wage bill i guess!

Re: Reece Oxford no games played for borussia mönchengladbach
Nothing wrong with this loan move, this is down to the player's attitude and application as far as i can see. He has had chances for us and hasn't taken them, could have had regular football at Reading but was too fat to play for them. Sending him off to a more professional environment away from the dickheads he inevitably hangs round with here is a sensible option. As far as i know German teams don't routinely loan obscure British teenagers for a laugh, they'll have been intending for him to have some game time. He obviously hasn't shown enough yet to get it. Couple more similar seasons and he's effectively ended a promising career. Hope he sorts himself out. The twat.

"Isn't giving him CL experience a dangerous precedent?"

You know this is Borussia Monchengladbach, not Dortmund, don't you? They're not in the CL. Finished 9th last year.

See that Jordan Spence (arguably an earlier version of Reece Oxford in terms of potential/England age teams etc.) scored for Ipswich last evening. Anyone seen him play? Rated?

Indeed... could be another Ravel type situation.
Anyway, since when has going abroad ever helped any adult English player.. nevermind a kid? Only a few have left and done well, usualy those capable of learning the language.

I am guessing Borussia offered the biggest loan fee.
People on here have implied that it was thought he needed to get away from 'distractions'
My view is if he isn't mature enough to knuckle down then he shouldn't be pandered to.

Re: Reece Oxford no games played for borussia mönchengladbach
Really? What a surprise. This loan must be one of the dumbest ever undertaken. If he played every game for Borussia and impressed then a) why the hell would the coaching staff in Stratford not see this and keep him for our porous defence? If a) then b) - why would the kid be keen to return to a mid-table slog with us next season? Isn't giving him CL experience a dangerous precedent? Or c) there's no chance of him gaining experience in the German league he may as well have stayed with us. At any other club, Oxford would have been given more of an opportunity by now. We know he's good - or at least he was good enough to start for a few games two season back - so what the fuck is going on?

Manager may have thought away at Dortmund where they were 5-0 down after an hour with a 15min Aubameyang hat-trick may have been throwing him to the wolves.
If he can't get off the bench after that shambles though next match you'd wonder what he is doing there.

All the indications are however that Rice has the ability AND the mentality (you need both) and I expect him to be a regular starter by season end.
Still stick by my prediction that Oxford won't start another Premier league game for us.
Expect that one of the clubs with an English player shortage will gamble that they can turn him into a player

He has a good agent. Not many players get a huge long term contract when unproven.

Declan Rice on the other hand is different gravy...Reese Burke should make it also

I'm pretty confident Declan Rice will have a better career to be honest. What was that rumour about Man U offering 10 mill for Oxford a couple of seasons ago? Perhaps we should have cashed in on him if true.
